Programming and Art generally goes against each other but i've found one language that take advantage of the greatness of the both worlds.
it's called "processing"
and this can be downloaded from Processing.org
i don't really know the details or how much it can do since it is not a low level language such as C but this seems to make things easier for artists. if you know bit about coding syntax and everything is pretty easy. with about 5 lines of code you can create some animation that was not possible just with tweening in flash/drawing frames on image ready.
well flash also has capabilities to handle graphics/movie clips with actionscript but this one has a bit more control over bitmaps and sound frequencies.
maybe just for an experiment but you can actually create something that mixes sound and visual easily.
for example you can load your photo, and analyze pixel data and transform them into something or in other words create something abstract just from one data. that is probably applicable to sound to graphics transformation or vice versa. (it usually requires serious low level programming knowledge.. but with this that stuff seems pretty easy)
portability i mean how much it can interact with other tools (flash, cocoa, java, etc etc) is still a question but this seems to be fun to just play around with.
